About

For over 70 years, we’ve been building a legacy of leadership and community in Los Alamitos.

The Mission

Building Great Kids

The Mission of The Youth Center is to transform children’s lives one family at a time through collaborative educational, social, and recreational programs. Since 1952, The Youth Center has been proud to build meaningful partnerships throughout the community. These valued collaborations play a vital role in strengthening the organization and helping expand its impact for generations to come.

OUR History

Our Story & Purpose

At The Youth Center, we’re here to help kids grow, learn, and shine, one family at a time. Through fun activities, learning opportunities, and supportive programs, we create a place where every child feels encouraged and inspired.

As we look to the future, we’re excited to keep guiding and supporting young people through learning, mentorship, and community. Our goal is to help every child build confidence, discover their strengths, and become a leader in their own unique way.

1949

The vision for The Youth Center began following the passing of Grace Johnson, a dedicated volunteer and Chamber of Commerce president. In her honor, William C. Poe, Jr. proposed using local festival funds to create a youth center. With strong community support and a donated lot, the foundation was set.

1952

The Youth Center was officially established as the Los Alamitos Youth Center, becoming a hub for local families. Built on a mission to support youth through social, educational, and recreational programs, it quickly became a vital part of the community.

1960s–1970s

As the surrounding population grew, so did the need for expanded services. The Youth Center experienced rapid growth, leading to the development of larger facilities and partnerships with the City of Los Alamitos and other local organizations.

1976–1980s

The organization moved to its Oak Street location, marking a new chapter of growth. With the addition of the Teen Center and a wider range of programs, including athletics and employment services, The Youth Center strengthened its role as a community cornerstone.

1997

The first Community Support Campaign launched, raising over $70,000 to sustain and grow programs. This initiative laid the groundwork for ongoing fundraising efforts that have generated over $1 million to date.

2018–2019

The Youth Center surpassed one million service hours and earned recognition as a Top-Rated Nonprofit. It also celebrated 30 years of partnership with the Los Alamitos Unified School District, expanding access to music education for elementary students.

2020–2021

During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Youth Center adapted quickly by providing essential childcare for frontline workers and transitioning programs online. New initiatives, including SHARK After School Adventures and R.A.S.C.A.L.S. at the Plaza, were successfully introduced.

2023–Present

A major milestone was reached with the move to a new permanent facility, fully funded through community support. With expanded programs and the launch of an Endowment Fund, The Youth Center is positioned to grow its impact and serve future generations.
